Fat Transfer to the Breast: What It Can and Cannot Do

General information about treatment in Seoul, published by MOOi Plastic Surgery Clinic for international patients. Our own approach, physicians and prices are on the pages linked at the end.

Fat transfer breast augmentation uses your own fat, taken by liposuction, to add volume to the breast without an implant. It appeals to patients who want a natural feel and no foreign material — but it has clear limits.

What it can do

  • Add a modest, natural-looking increase in volume
  • Improve mild asymmetry between the breasts
  • Restore some fullness lost after pregnancy or weight change
  • Slim the area the fat is taken from at the same time

What it cannot do

  • Deliver the large, predictable increase an implant gives
  • Lift a breast that has significantly sagged
  • Guarantee that all of the grafted fat survives — part of it is reabsorbed

Who is a good candidate

Patients with enough spare fat to harvest and who are happy with a subtle change are the best candidates. Very slim patients may not have enough donor fat. Some patients need more than one session to reach the volume they want.

Recovery

Recovery is generally centred on the donor area, which is bruised and swollen and needs a compression garment. The breast itself is usually less sore than after implant surgery. The result is judged after a few months, once the grafted fat that will remain has settled.

Fat, implant or both?

If the goal is a subtle change, fat alone may be enough. If more volume is wanted, an implant or a hybrid plan combining an implant with fat is usually discussed. A surgeon should explain why one is recommended for your body.
